Fracture Mechanics & Adaptive Structures

This research combines computational fracture mechanics with the design of adaptive structures, with a focus on damage evolution, crack propagation and structural response.

Fracture modelling and structural adaptation

My research investigates the relationships between geometry, material behaviour and loading in fracture initiation and propagation. Computational models and experimental observations provide a basis for analysing failure and informing structural design.

  • Fracture prediction: modelling how cracks initiate and propagate in brittle materials and structures.
  • Model validation: assessing fracture predictions against experimental observations.
  • Adaptive structural design: exploring how fracture-guided design can support responsive 4D-printed structures.

Fracture-Guided Design for Intelligent 4D-Printed Adaptive Structures

This fellowship aims to develop a design framework for structures that can detect damage and adapt their shape or behaviour. It brings fracture mechanics into the design of 4D-printed adaptive structures.
